Fw 190A-5/ U12 gun pods

Eduard BRASSIN 1/48 Fw 190A-5/ U12 gun pods for Eduard kit

Fw 190 A-5 - The A-5 was developed after it was determined that the Fw 190 could easily carry more ordnance. The D-2 engine was moved forward another 15 cm (6 in) as had been tried out earlier on the service test A-3/U1 aircraft, moving the centre of gravity forward to allow more weight to be carried aft.
Fw 190 A-5/U2 - The A-5/U2 was designed as a night Jabo-Rei and featured anti-reflective fittings and exhaust flame dampers. A centre-line ETC 501 rack typically held a 250 kg (550 lb) bomb, and wing-mounted racks mounted 300 L drop tanks. A EK16 gun camera, as well as landing lights, were fitted to the wing leading edge. The U2 was armed with only two 20 mm MG 151 cannon.

Eduard continues to release upgrade sets in their BRASSIN series to enhance the detail in their newly tooled  Fw 190A-5.That includes this new set  that offers  the gun pods to represent the special heavily armed  Fw 190A-5/U12 variant .The Package inside of the traditional blister pack with foam protection , is consisted of six  pieces in grey resin and a small 8 pieces  p.e. fret .

All of the pieces are casted perfectly without any air bubbles. The removal of the  casting blocks is very easy with minimal cleaning of the pieces. There is one gun pond for each under wing which is consisted of a gondola and two 151/20 gun barrels. Also a brass front base and mounting  loop  is supplied in the p.e fret.Although only two loops are need for both ,six are provived in case you lose any of them as they are tiny.

What is also interesting and different from other gun pod sets we have seen before , is the inclusion  of a decal sheet with markings for an aircraft. Yes Eduard offers the  necessary  markings for Lt. Erich’s Hondt  Fw 190A-5/U12  (W.Nr 410266) , CO of the 2./JG 11 during  October 1943.
Actually there were a few A-5’s with the U12 configuration to see operational use , with the most clearly photographed Hondt’s Wurger.

The decal sheet is printed by Eduard with the register being excellent. It carries the serial num. of the aircraft, the kill marks for the rudder, the fuselage number ‘’BLACK 13”, the emblem of the 2. Staffel , lower wing national markings which are trimmed as portion of them is not visible due to the gun pods, and finally the distinct V shaped red band which was used by the Gruppe  I /JG11 to denote the Shwarmfuher.
